Chapter 11

Lily Yoder was a gute hitter, even though she was only a sixth grader. She almost always got on base and sometimes she even got to second if Reuben was playing shortstop. She was the first batter of the game today. She picked up the bat, tapped her foot with it, and stepped up to home plate, which was a square piece of plywood from Lily’s barn.

“You can do it, Lily,” Jonah shouted.

She turned and smiled at him and almost knocked him over. He smiled back and did his best not to stare. Even though Lily was a girl, she was his best friend, even better than Ben and Paul. She was wonderful pretty and fun to be with, and Jonah didn’t know how he’d gotten so lucky. Even though her dawdi was paying her a dollar a week to be nice to Jonah, Jonah kind of didn’t think she was doing it for the money. Since Dat wouldn’t let Jonah go anywhere without him, Lily came to his house a lot, and for sure and certain she didn’t need to do that to earn her money.

Since they were playing in Lily’s backyard, she and Ruth Glick were the captains, and Lily had chosen Jonah first. She didn’t have to do that to earn her dollar.

Ruth was pitching, because she was an eighth grader and always had to be the pitcher, but mostly nobody minded because she was pretty gute and tall so she could get the hits that sailed over the shorter boys’ heads.

Lily swung the bat and missed by a mile. Ruth was fast.

“Keep your eye on it,” Jonah said.

She turned and smiled at him again. He felt like laughing for joy. He was just in that kind of mood today. Dat had agreed to let Jonah play softball after school for the first time, and Jonah was so happy, he thought he might float off the ground. Dat said he had some things he needed to get done in the barn, and Jonah didn’t even care what those things were. As long as Dat let him alone, it didn’t matter.

Lily hit the second pitch down the third base line and got to first before the ball did. First base was an embroidered pillow from Lily’s house that said, “Let your light so shine.” Jonah wasn’t sure if Lily’s mamm would be mad about her pillow being used as a base, but he wasn’t about to interrupt the game by asking.

Jonah picked up the bat and pointed to Lily. “Get ready to run. I’ll hit you home.”

“Boo,” Danny Sensenig called from left field. Danny was one of the younger kids, only ten years old, but he always tagged along with his older bruder Perry. Danny was a gute player, even if he was a little whiney sometimes.

Maybe Jonah shouldn’t have acted so cocky and proud, but it was just the kind of mood he was in. He set his feet and lifted the bat. Ruth pitched something right in the strike zone, but Jonah never liked hitting the first pitch.
